Whom will you serve?

Joshua 24:15 “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.“
Let me start by saying that this verse does NOT refer in any way to salvation. Not too long ago I would have (and did) use this text as a proof text that people have a choice (accept or reject) in their salvation. We are taught by Scripture that there are only two options when choosing whom we will serve, we will either serve God or Satan as master. 1 John 3:8-10 says “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. (9) No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. (10) By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.” If you are a child of the Devil then your only desire is to do his will (John 8:44).
The Scripture also tells us that we are all born in sin and are slaves to sin. This makes us all servants of Satan (see Total Depravity for details) at first. Only those who are among the Elect (see Unconditional Election) and have been made regenerate (and eventually saved) actually get the chance to decide whom they will serve. Yes, this means that members of the Elect can choose not to serve God – this is disobedience. Inside each member of the Elect there is a war going on between the new nature and the old sinful nature. Romans 12:2 says “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Now back to the question. Whom will you serve – God or Satan? Matthew 6:24 says “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” We can only choose one and we must choose one or the other. There is no third option. Many non-believers will try to claim that there is a third (or more) option. The Bible does not leave any room for this conclusion.
Now for the important part. I ask you to examine your life. Are you being used by God to accomplish His will? If not, then you are a servant of Satan. Does this bother you? It should!! If you have been saved before and are living in a backslidden state then it is time to repent and return to God and His ways. If you have never before felt the call of the Holy Spirit in your life then maybe now is the time. Do you hear or feel it. If so, submit and invite Jesus into your heart and He will do a miracle in your life. Then you too can choose whom you will serve…….
