Is God sovereign or not?

Who is the final authority? For Christians this comes down to 5 words. They are “In the beginning God created” (Genesis 1:1) The simple truth that this brings out is that before there was anything (as we know it) God already was. Next we see what God did. He created. What did He create? John 1:1-3 says In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. So what did God create? All things. What is not included in “all things”? Verse 3 answers this question for us – “without him was not any thing made that was made”.

From the text of Scripture we have demonstrated that God is the Creator of all things. It would seem logical that the Creator would be greater than His creation. Being greater gives the Creator the right to set the rules under which the creation must exist. This is what sovereignty is – the ability to set the rules under which the creation exists.

God is sovereign and the sooner we accept this the sooner we can look to Him for the instructions He has given us and the happier our lives will be. Let God be God and serve Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and body and He will bless you.
