Rapid Acceleration in Human Evolution??

The title to the article (found here) got my attention. How about you?

You might be curious to know what we are evolving into but they are not talking about Darwinian Evolution. The article is discussing the changing characteristics within the human species….this is know as micro evolution.

The genetic changes have related to numerous different human characteristics, the researchers said.

Let me be clear, I do not discount micro evolution (if we must call it that). Changing characteristics can be observed in almost every living thing as they adapt to their environment. There are numerous causes for the changing characteristics. The article lists a few:

Many of the recent genetic changes reflect differences in the human diet brought on by agriculture, as well as resistance to epidemic diseases that became mass killers following the growth of human civilizations, the researchers said.

The changes have been driven by the colossal growth in the human population — from a few million to 6.5 billion in the past 10,000 years — with people moving into new environments to which they needed to adapt, added Henry Harpending, a University of Utah anthropologist.

The article then moves on to discuss the favorable gene mutations.  By definition, a mutation is a loss of information and is always bad.  There can not be a beneficial mutation.  So how do we explain the changes that are taking place?  First, we have to look at what the Bible says.  For that we must look at the creation account as in Genesis.  We see there that God created…everything and it was GOOD.  Once He finished, on the sixth day and after He had created man He said it was VERY GOOD (Genesis 1).

So what happened?  Sin!  Sin entered the world (Genesis 3) and things have been deteriorating ever since.  We (Adam and Eve) were created perfect.  Once sin entered the world our bodies (and all creation) became corrupt and the corruption is slowing destroying what God created.  I would suggest that the mutations (which are always a loss of information) are the result of the deterioration.

Having said that I also want to point out that we have a hope.  That hope is in Jesus Christ.  He died for our sins and restored our ability to have a relationship with God.  Jesus will return one day for the purpose of completing that restoration.  Trust in Him.  Call upon Him.  If you do, you will be welcomed into the family of God and be restored into that relationship with Him.  Don’t rely on man’s explanations…on man’s failed theories.  Turn to the one who was there and is the source of all hope and truth.

  1. The definition of a mutation is an alteration in the genetic material, and there are various types. Some are information loss, but there are also duplications, inversions, point mutations, etc. ( here’s one reference; you can find others)

Well said. I’ve been considering that there is a sort of evolution going on, but it is going in quite the opposite direction that secularist scientists have been trumpeting so loudly.

A more correct term might be “devolution”, or perhaps “entropy”: a progression from a state of greater order and perfection to greater disorder and brokenness.

God did create everything and saw that it was good; and He created everything in its various kinds.

Specifically, I believe that in Eden, there were several kinds of creatures; canids, cetaceans, ursids, simians, and felids and other major groupings of distinctly similar lifeforms: these are all “kinds”.

All creatures were created from that same stellar building blocks (dust: we might call it proteins and enzymes and molecules on the smaller orders of measure) – which can account for the gross similarity in DNA between the many different phyla, orders, families and genera and much closer similarities in mtDNA shared between morphologically similar genera within a kind (i.e. tigers and lions being more genetically similar than either genera are to whales or fishes).

And, there is a superabundance of “junk” DNA, or unused DNA that has some reason for being, perhaps as a buffer to slow down genetic loss over time.

As time progressed (from Noah’s Ark) the various animal and plant kinds diversified according to the information available in their genes, and as newer species emerged from within the same kinds, some speciation may have occurred where significant mutation and genetic loss made it less likely for a mix of sufficiently branched kinds to produce viable offspring (the horse + donkey = infertile mule being an example: very closely related families and genera, that is, the same kind [equids] but far enough apart to make reproduction of a viable animal sharing the ancestral kind’s DNA very difficult).

Therefore, it seems logical that what we perceive as evolution (the horse being a progression from the less advanced eohippus) is much more likely to be a corrupted descendant from a more genetically perfect equid kind, which held the potential to bring forth all sorts of equid variants.

Another case may be found in wolves (canis lupus) and domesticated dogs (canis lupus familiaris) – where c. lupus is generally a much more hardy and durable creature, and has all or most of the genetic code to produce all the variations of c. lupus familiaris (everything from poodles to dobermans).

The only exception to this general rule is man – who was created especially in God’s own image, directly from the dust of the earth. But it is not unthinkable that He also used a similar pattern in DNA which already worked in an existing kind of creation which shared certain traits – bipedalism, tool use, opposable thumbs – that is to say, God did not need to re-invent the physiological and genetic wheels so to speak.

However, it should also be self-evident that humankind is a distinct kind from simians and so-called “hominids” (human-like apes often touted as fossil evidence for evolution). We ambulate in a distinctly different manner, lack opposable toe-thumbs, and have significantly more developed brains – which would be less likely to have developed from within the range of simian-kind.

I do apologize for taking up much space here with my thought pattern – but to me, the case for our degradation from a perfect and “very good” original creation is as plain as the nose on our faces. 🙂

Do not apologize. Your comments are welcome here.

I am familiar with a few of the things you mention. Entropy is basically the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Many people have tried to show how this does not apply to evolution but I thing they have failed.

I also think you discussion on “kinds” is interesting. If more people understood how the animals we have today have developed then there would be far fewer questions about how Noah had all the animals on the Ark.

  4. Ed Darrell says:

Yep, that’s Darwinian evolution. Scientists don’t recognize any difference between “macro” and “micro” evolution except this: When it gets to the point that one population is a different species from the original population, we’re sure it’s “macro.”

Noah didn’t have any problem getting all the animals into the ark at all – novelist’s license.

  5. Ed Darrell says:

Sure entropy applies to evolution. But it offers no barrier to evolution. That’s the point.

      Well said Ed
I have one question to who ignores evidence of evolution being a fact:
What if you had a virus in you, it multiplies, mutates and ultimately evolves so fast that antiviral agents stop working in a matter of days. If you could magnify the older virus a million times and look at the newer version after a few days you would see how they are staggeringly different. Would you still say evolution is untrue?
      Another one:
Imagine if you give enough time (millions of years) to other, slower, multiplicative and mutating agents in the world (all other life forms), don’t you think something similar would happen?
      Curious about the possible responses…
