How Can We “Walk In The Light”…..

1 John 1:5-10 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. [ESV]

1 John is a great book. If you have not read it or not read it recently I suggest that you do. In this post I want to discuss how we are able to walk in the light. Do we simply decide one day that we want to start walking in the light? Are there any requirements we must meet before we begin to walk in the light? If these seem like “loaded” questions they are so please don’t hold that against me.

First, lets define what “walking in the light” means. We are given the context in verse 5 where we are told that God is light. We must also know that when we see “walking” in the Bible, it often is a metaphor for how we live our day-to-day lives. With these things in mind it becomes clear what “walking in the light” means. It means to be living daily in accordance to God’s commands. Simple enough, right? Now that we know what “walking in the light” means we must turn our attention to how we can actually live according to God’s commands. This is not a small task.

The first thing is that we must come to the realization that we are NOT already “walking in the light”. This happens when we are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and we see that we have a need for a Savior. We all (for the most part) have a belief that we are basically good people but the truth, as is taught to us in the Bible, is that we are actually wicked sinful people who deserve to spend eternity separated from God in Hell. Regeneration is an act of the Holy Spirit and we have no part in it.  In regeneration, God changes us from being spiritually dead to being spiritually alive.  He changes our heart of stone to a heart of flesh.

Once we recognize our need for a Savior we are willing to listen and respond to the Gospel.  We must hear and respond to the Gospel before we can “walk in the light”.  When we respond to the Gospel, by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God adopts us into His family.  We become joint heirs with Jesus.  We must be adopted into His family before we can “walk in the light”.  As adopted children, we then become responsible to live under the authority of our heavenly Father.  This means following His commands.  When we follow His commands in our day to day lives we are “walking in the light”.  Verse 7 gives us the benefits of “walking in the light”.  We will have fellowship with one another and will be cleansed by the blood of Christ.  Is that not AWESOME?

Are you “walking in the light”?

It is clear, you do not know what it means to walk in the light. Your twisted understanding of the Word has led to over 33,000 different sects of christianity. Did you think Jesus was just kidding when He said ” renounce yourself, pickup your cross and follow me” and ” enter ye the straight gate for many will try but few will make it” and also ” he who is not willing to give up everything to follow me is not worthy of me”? Your feel good doctrines and Jesus did everything so I can sit on my a$$ and do nothing sickens a true man of God. Christ Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. He came as an example for us to follow. The soul that sinneth shall die, if you are not spiritual enough to understand that, then you will never be saved. If you refuse Christ Jesus the right to chastize, rebuke, cleanse and purify you with fire and the Holy Spirit. If you refuse Him the right to put to death the man of sin that rules the throne of your soul how will you ever claim salvation? The gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus. If you want this gift, if you want to understand about the recieving of it and how it’s done, if you want to understand the scriptures and more. Then repent of your man made ignorance and ask our heavenly Father to give you that same spirit the apostles had, He alone who is able to give utterance and He alone is the key to understanding the scriptures. Each one of us is responsible for holding back what must be revealed, that being the man of sin. He who sits in the throne of God and proclaimes himself to be God. He must be wrenched away before the true light which is Christ Jesus will fill your soul. Take a chance, answer that knock on your hearts door, open it and get the h–l out of the way. Moses hair was turned white just for being exposed to Gods’ hinder parts. Do you want to be standing in the way when He wrenches the man of perdition out of his throne and destroys him by the brightness of His coming? Once he’s gone then Jesus will set about cleansing and purifying your wicked soul, preparing it for your resurection into newness of life, to be trnsformed into the image of Christ Hinself. Then are you truly born again and saved. Before you leave this earth. For if Christ Jesus be not formed in you, then the law is your taskmaster and you are still in your sins. Repent and seek ye the Lord while He still maybe found. Any one who will not admit that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is the anti-christ— does He live in you? Do you walk with God or are you like the hundreds of millions of imperfect christians who are constantly crying up a body of sin and death every day waiting on the second coming. Don’t you people understand it’s not the getting of the mark you have to worry about? You already have it. It’s the getting rid of it you have to worry about. —And He said Peter, Peter, if I don’t wash you, you can not be mine. And Peter said, then wash all of me Lord. Repent and walk in the Light as He is in the Light for the Light of the Father is reflected in the face of His dear son, Christ Jesus. Then does He give us power to become the sons of God and of the Light.

    • The first thing you need to find out is what is the NT albout. Jesus did not come to die for the sins of all mankind but for a very special group. The lost sheep of the House of Israel. He died to be able to remarry his divorce wife that he had to buy back from some one else. He died for the sins of the Group not the sins of the individual. He was born of the Hebrews of the House of Judah and he came only for the Hebrews of the House of Israel. No gentiles allowed at anytime. Salvation is by race and race alone for those of the Hebrew race. He was not married to the gentile dogs. in Amos 3 speaking to the house of Israel, You only have I known of all the families of the earth. No gentiles allowed again. The next thing is that there are no christians in the NT the word is not translated but transliterated. It is used only one time. Go to the book of Peter again and read the first five verses again and you will find that it is to the ones scattered among the gentiles cities of Asia No gentiles are listed in the book of Peter it is to the house of Israel Peter quotes Ex and Hosea. The sons of God can only be Hebrews who he chose on Mt Sinai of Arabia. The gentiles were rejected from the foundation of the earth. God hated Esau before he was born, God hated Canaan because of his mohter. He was ony 1-2 years old when Noah cursed him forever. Ishamel was rejected because of his mother as were the other 6 sons of Abraham because their mother’s were Canaanites Get your family line correct that God only wants the Hebrews that he imputed to them righteousness that is why Paul could say the righteous by faith shall live, The House of Judah has never been lost and therefore has no need of salvation from her sins.
The church destroyed the invitation of the house of Israel out from among the gentile dogs and the church has been corrupted since its beginning. The church is the heathen church of the Lord Jesus Christ to deceive gentiles since its beginning.

For GOD so loved the WORLD, that HE gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believes in HIM should not parish but have everlasting life. “Jesus did not come to judge the world, but through HIM the world might be saved. I don’t see “But through HIM the Hebrew nation might be saved” You are all over the place. You’re quoting Old testement law as opposed to NT grace. The Jews rejected Christ, therefore Paul was sent to the gentiles and throughout to preach the gospel. Salvation is a gift.
Slow down, take a breath, All I’m hearing from you is “blah, blah , blah, blah, blah.

      Wow, you really clarified everything???????
I truly hope anyone who is honestly seeking to walk in the light as HE is in the light, does not read your reply. If felt like I just took a tour of the entire Bible at warp speed. I’m not sure what you were trying to say. I really felt the love of Christ in your advice. NOT!

Thank you for your commentary. I believe our commentaries must always be in keeping with the tone of scripture that is commented upon. I notice no profanity or hints of it in this passage and I appreciate the encouraging yet firm way you present the need to walk in the light. As the passage says, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” The deeds of darkness are obvious, according to Galatians 5, as is the fruit of the Spirit that comes from walking in the Light of God’s Word. It is the Blood of Jesus that makes us fit vessels. We, however, are cracked pots in constant need of refilling.

In short, keep up the good work that the Lord has gifted and empowered you to perform!

    • Where is salvation based on the sheep saying I am dirty will you wash me and make me clean? The shepherd shears the sheep and takes them to pasture but he never hears from them. Salvation is never offered to the Goats they are rejected The sheep are already owned by the shepard he takes care of them. The goats can never become Sheep by bleating

  5. God is light and there is nothing in Him hidden from His children. We as believers are encouraged to live and walk in light. This means that We are urged to expose ourselves and our deeds not only to the world to show that we are children of God but also to the innermost living in ourselves in relation to the righteousness of God. Like one may not see a stain on his white shirt when the switch is off is the same way one may not see stains of sin in his life while in the darkness of sin. Unless this man switches on that He will realise the stain on his shirt. Likewise christians must expose the deeds of darkness some of which are written in Galatians 5:19 and take up the deeds of light written in Galatian 5:22 then they will walk in light of God. 2corinthians 6:14 asks `how can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?

    • Where is the decision of the sheep to follow making them them become sheep. Jesus said I have sheep of another fold did they have to turn on the lite to become sheep or did they have to confess we are your sheep will you own us/ They had been his sheep from the foundation of the earth when he was the passover lamb for them. He paid the price twice to get them once in Egypt when he gave Egypt and Ehoopia for them and when he was the price to buy them back from the one who own them. The sheep paid nothing for themselves to be sheep of the House of israel

    Ruwangura Andrew,

    You said

God is light and there is nothing in Him hidden from His children.

I think you said this wrong….God is light and there is nothing in His children hidden from Him. Also, I don’t know that I agree that believers are encouraged to expose ourselves and our deeds to the world or to our “innermost living”. We are called to perfect obedience and the world will see our deeds as we live our our obedience. Once we begin to compare ourselves to the true and only real standard (the Holiness of God), after we are regenerated, we will naturally see how far short we fall of that standard and as a result we will be driven to cry out to God to cleanse us since we are not able to cleanse ourselves.

I hope that helps clarify things.

Walking in the light means uncovering all our sinful darkness and secrets. In the book of Matthew Jesus calls it “cleansing” the inside of the cup and dish….CLeansing is confessing…We have to
Repent/confess all our sins, bring the darkness to the light, do not hide it, but rather expose it. This is what sanctifies us and lets us walk in holiness as He is….We are to be Holy and blameless when he returns. Having no faults or problems with other people. Correct all your wrongs with others to the best of your ability, having no conflicts, give apologies where they are deserved………BELIEVE We have to OBEY all the commandments, be BAPTIZED the way Jesus was, through water immersion, in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Most people today don’t realize that repenting includes “confessing of sins”…..Confessing is a hugh part of our salvation…We are suppose to do it with many witnesses. Acts 19:18 gives us a clear view of how people did it then…And many who had believed came confessing and “telling their deeds”. 19. Also, many who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned then in the site of all. Hebrews Ch. 10 explains the new covenant, He will write the laws on the tablets of our hearts (our conscience) This is how he chastens us to do what is right…We can ignore or follow the Spirit. The Spirit will remind us of the things we need to fix or repair, through our conscience……This is pure truth! I learned all this through dreams, just in the past year!!! I was never taught this way in my church…;) For the past 10 months, the Spirit has been leading me to confess my sins and to repair mistakes that I made in the past…Lots of things….I have been hard at work for 10 months now! I would urge you to do the same too. Changes are coming soon and we need to be ready. If we have sins that we have not confessed, its called bondage. It gives Satan authority over us, but as soon as we confess, the bondage is broken and Satan loses His power over us…This allows God to gives us His blessings and protection and also what will save us….We have to confess of all sins in order to be sanctified, which is what makes us holy.
