Did Obama Really Say This?

I got another one of those chain emails that I normally delete without reading but I read this one.  It has quotes from Obama’s books.  Most are stuff I have heard before but one caught my attention.

From Audacity of Hope:”I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

No page citation was given and I don’t have the book.  No context is given in which the comment was made.  I am curious if this is really in his book or is this a hoax.  Do you know?  I can believe he would have said this but I can also believe people would make this up or take it out of context.

This statement is a rewording of a passage from page 261 of The Audacity of Hope:

“In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction

So, it’s in the book but the full context completely changes the meaning of the quotation.

    from Snopes.com…

Aparently the citation is from page 261 of his book. Snopes says it is different from the book in that the email says muslims while the book says Arabs and Pakistani Americans. Snopes also says it is a reassurance that Obama would treat all fairly.

    My take…

Arab=Muslim for the past 1500 years
Obama will only reassure those that support him.

side note: I just saw your A. W. Pink quote in the sidebar. That is also the position stated by Karl Barth in “Introduction to Evangelical Theology”.

I personally think that there have been way too many rumors about Obama to ignore. He has been known to associate with terrorists. Get a clue people!

No doubt of that, Amanda. I’m just a stickler for facts. The emails that have been going around have not been accurate and contain passages from Obama’s books that are either false or completely out of context.

In the one in question Obama said the Pakistani- and Arab-Americans – i.e. US citizens – needed specific reassurances from Obama that he would side with them if the US government chose to enact anything similar to the Japanese Internment camps of WW2.

You know what? So would I in that specific case.
